A strong earthquake shook western Turkey on Monday night, causing at least three buildings to collapse, Turkish officials said, according to the Washington Post.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Sindirgi city in Balikesir province, according to the emergency and disaster management agency.

The earthquake was also felt in Istanbul, and in the provinces of Bursa, Manisa and Izmir, Haberturk news channel reported.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said at least three buildings and a shop had collapsed.

“So far, we have not identified any loss of life, but we are continuing the assessment,” Sindirgi district administrator Dogukan Koyuncu told the state-run Anadolu news agency.

Private broadcaster NTV quoted firefighters as saying that three buildings that had been damaged by a previous earthquake and were uninhabited had collapsed.

The city of Sindirgi was hit by a 6.1 earthquake in August as well, when one person died and several dozen others were injured. Since then, several small earthquakes have occurred in the region.

In 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed more than 53,000 people in Turkey and destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 provinces in the south and southeast of the country. Another 6,000 people died in the northern areas of neighboring Syria.
