Economic resilience, investments and financial stability on the agenda of the debates at The Economist Romania Government Roundtable

The major economic themes of the moment — financial stability, investments, technological transformation, competitiveness and sustainability of public systems — will be on the agenda of the high-level regional conference The Economist Romania Government Roundtable, organized by The Economist editorial group in Bucharest, between March 30 and April 1, 2026.

High-ranking officials from Romania, such as Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu, Ministers Alexandru Nazare (Finance), Irineu Darău (Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism), Dragoș Pîslaru (European Funds and Investments), Alexandru Rogobete (Health), Florin Manole (Labor), the President of the Competition Council, Bogdan Chirițoiu, are expected to enter into dialogue with officials from the region and at the European level, as well as with business leaders, in sessions moderated by Joan Hoey and Alasdair Ross, editors of The Economist.

How geopolitical instability influences the European financial landscape and the role of financial markets in supporting Romania's economic resilience will be debated by Alexandru Nazare, Minister of Finance, together with Ömer Tetik, CEO, Banca Transilvania and Alexandru Petrescu, President, Financial Supervisory Authority.

A panel dedicated to the technological transition will analyze how digitalization and innovation influence economic competitiveness and international cooperation in Europe and especially in South-Eastern Europe, with the participation of Irineu Darău, Minister of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism, and Iwona Sikora, Senior Vice President and General Manager EMEA, Iron Mountain.

An investment session will examine the role of financial institutions in supporting competitiveness and economic cohesion in Europe. Among the participants: Dragoș-Nicolae Pîslaru, Minister of Investments and European Projects; Bogdan Chirițoiu, president, Competition Council; Anca Dragu, Governor, National Bank of Moldova; Sergiu Cristian Manea, chief executive, Romanian Commercial Bank.

The impact of demographic changes and budgetary pressures on health systems will be analyzed in a session dedicated to social and economic resilience. Among the guests who will discuss the need for sustainable public policies in the field are: Alexandru-Florin Rogobete, Minister of Health, Government of Romania; Adonis Georgiades, Minister of Health, Government of Greece, Fady Chreih, CEO, Regina Maria, Mehmet Ali Bayar, Board Member, CCN Holding, Georgiana Miron, Executive Committee Member, Groupama

The perspectives of investments and the business environment in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, as well as the role of European funds and the labor market in supporting economic development will be analyzed in a panel which will include Florin Manole, Minister of Labour, Harry Theoharis, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece; Egemen Bağış, former Minister for European Affairs, Turkey; Beata Javorcik, chief economist, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Mihai Bobaru, country sales manager, JA Solar.

High-level regional dialogue platform with the participation of Daron Acemoglu, Nobel laureate in economics

The Economist Romania Government Round table is an event organized in partnership with RCI Holding, which brings together government leaders from the region, European officials, experts and representatives of major companies in the energy sector, infrastructure, finance and other fields of activity to create a platform for dialogue on how Europe and the region can respond to new security risks and accelerate investments in energy infrastructure, in the context of rapid geopolitical changes.

The conference will open at the Romanian Athenaeum, on March 30, with an inaugural session in which special guests will be: Professor Daron Acemoglu, laureate of the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2024, Enrico Letta, director of the Jacques Delors Institute, former Prime Minister of Italy and EU rapporteur for the single market; Mugur Isărescu, Governor of the National Bank of Romania and Yannis Stournaras, Governor of the Bank of Greece.
