I stopped my cat from sharpening her claws on the sofa: just a couple of life hacks – the pet is happy, and the upholstery is intact

Almost every cat owner faces this problem when the upholstery of the furniture attracts the pet. As a result, beautiful furniture ends up with nicks and cuts, and the relationship with the cat deteriorates.

But don’t rush to scold your pet. A scratching post for a cat is not just a whim, but a necessity. It is important to teach the animal to use special places for claw points, while keeping the furniture intact.

1. Provide an alternative

  • Buy or make a scratching post: vertical, horizontal or combined.
  • Place it near your cat's favorite spot.
  • Use a variety of materials to understand what exactly your pet likes.

2. Attract the cat to the scratching post

  • Sprinkle catnip on the scratching post or apply special sprays to attract it.
  • Praise your pet and give her a treat when she sharpens her claws on the desired object.
  • If your cat likes to play with your hands, periodically move the play to the scratching post to form the habit.

3. Furniture protection

  • Use special pads or furniture film to prevent claws from leaving marks.
  • Double-sided tape on areas where your cat likes to sharpen her claws often helps – cats don't like sticky surfaces.
  • Replaceable covers or capes are a temporary solution until the habit is formed.

4. Negative reinforcement

  • Do not scream or splash the cat with water, this is very stressful for her.
  • You can use a safe spray with a citrus scent, as cats do not like the smell of orange or lemon.
  • A slight noise (such as clapping your hands) can sometimes help distract attention if the cat gets caught on furniture.

5. Trim your nails

  • Regular nail trimming reduces damage to furniture.
  • Do this carefully and gradually so that the cat gets used to it.
  • You can use special nail clippers for pets.

Place several scratching posts around the apartment, especially near the sofa and bed. Reward for correct behavior and be patient – the habit is formed gradually.

A cat does not sharpen its claws out of spite, it is a natural need. With the right approach, you can keep your home intact without restricting your pet.
