TSMC, the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer, has released a spectacular video showing how its “Fab 21” factory near Phoenix (USA) works. The images show hundreds of high-tech equipment working simultaneously to create semiconductors for America's biggest companies, including artificial intelligence (AI) processors and high-end phones, Tom's Hardware reports.

The factory's technological “jewels” are extreme ultraviolet light (EUV) lithography machines from the Dutch manufacturer ASML, which allow printing the most complex circuits. These devices are essential for chips like the Nvidia Blackwell B300 used in AI and supercomputing applications.

The video offers a rare look inside the factory's “clean rooms” – rooms specially set up to maintain the highest level of hygiene and chip protection. The yellow illumination used filters the light so as not to affect the sensitive materials used to print the circuits, a crucial detail to avoid damaging the chips during production.

TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) says it plans to rapidly transition to even more advanced technologies to meet growing demand for artificial intelligence chips. The company also plans to expand the Arizona factory by acquiring adjacent land, which will allow the creation of a “Gigafab” – a manufacturing complex capable of turning out more than 100,000 silicon wafers per month.

That expansion would turn the US state into a strategic hub for next-generation chips critical to smartphones, AI and high-performance computing applications.

TSMC makes the chips for the big Silicon Valley companies

TSMC announced in March that it would invest another $100 billion in the US to open 5 new factories, the announcement being made right at the White House after a meeting between the company's chief executive CC Wei and President Donald Trump.

The Taiwanese company had announced in May 2020 that it would build the factory in Arizona, which was personally visited by former President Joe Biden in December 2022.

TSMC does not design its own chips, but manufactures for customers such as Apple, Nvidia, AMD or Qualcomm, being known for its cutting-edge technologies that enable the manufacture of the most advanced and complex chips on an industrial scale.

The fact that major Silicon Valley companies have outsourced their manufacturing to TSMC has been a frequent target of criticism from President Donald Trump, who has gone so far as to accuse Taiwan of “stealing” American jobs.
