Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has reacted after the 4-0 defeat by Arsenal in the Champions League. In the end, he refused to justify the failure by lack of luck and admitted that the reason for this defeat was the mistakes made by his team during the match.
After a goalless first half, in the 57th minute Gabriel opened the scoreboard for the Gunners, and then the goals started to flow: Gyokeres scored two goals, and Gabriel Martinelli also managed to score.
Diego Simeone, impressed by Arsenal after humiliating Atletico Madrid in the Champions League: “The opponent is very strong on all lines, they run a lot and steal your thinking time”
“They were better and very effective in this phase of the match. After the goal from set-pieces, the game went in their favour, and deservedly so. By 1-0 they forced us to give our best. The team worked well, ran a lot, but we were simply outplayed by a stronger opponent. A key moment was Julian's miss when the ball went close to the bar in the first half.
These are the little details that could have tipped the scales in our favor. But the opponent is very strong on all lines, they run a lot and that robs you of your thinking time. Until the first goal we did well, but in that period of 13 minutes they were merciless”, said Diego Simeone, according to sportal.bg.
Interestingly, Arsenal punished Atletico with set-piece goals, which are basically a strong point of Diego Simeone's team. “I've always loved set pieces and there are teams that do them very well. They have incredible value in every match. When you decide the fate of a game with a set piece, you've already gone a long way to victory,” added the technician.
The positive aspect is the minutes until the first goal, in which we competed very well. With that goal we could have done more. They do it excellently, that's why they score so many goals. This shows the importance of set pieces in football. It's not bad luck, it's mistakes. During that time, their every action brought danger. This is the lesson that this match leaves us. Details are decisive in the various stages of the game
