Roskomnadzor is taking measures to partially restrict the work of foreign instant messengers WhatsApp (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia) and Telegram “to counter criminals,” the supervisory service said.

These messengers are the main services for deception and extortion of money, involving Russians in sabotage and terrorist activities, Roskomnadzor said, citing law enforcement agencies and citizen complaints.

“Repeatedly sent demands to take countermeasures by the owners of instant messengers were ignored. To counter criminals, in accordance with materials from law enforcement agencies, measures are being taken to partially restrict the work of foreign instant messengers,” the message says.

October 21 Residents of southern Russia complained of malfunctions in the Telegram messenger and WhatsApp. Complaints about the work of Telegram came from the Krasnodar Territory, Adygea, Rostov and Astrakhan regions, as well as from the Stavropol Territory. Most complaints were received due to failures of the mobile application.
