In the first half of this year, the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), which is subordinated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Portugal, directed a record number of over 9.2 thousand. immigrants asked to leave the country, the authorities of this government agency sent on Thursday.

According to the published report of the AIMA directorate, which, however, did not specify the number of immigrants expelled from Portugal, it was indicated that there was a drastic increase in the number of calls for foreigners to leave Portuguese territory, compared to the previous year.

It was recorded that throughout 2024, officials subordinated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs issued only 446 applications calling on immigrants to leave Portugal.

Meanwhile, according to the public television RTP, there may currently be approximately 40,000 people in Portugal. foreigners, to whom from January 2024 to mid-October this year notices were sent to leave the country. Although these letters include a 20-day deadline for leaving Portugal, the vast majority of recipients, according to the station, did not comply with the decision of the Ministry of the Interior in Lisbon.

Over the last year, citizens have received the most calls to leave Portugal Brazil, Algeria and Morocco, as well as Asian countries, mainly India and Pakistan.

According to statistics from the Portuguese government, in this area of ​​over The country has 10 million citizens and 1.5 million immigrants. Human rights organizations claim that these figures are underestimated and the number of immigrants already exceeds 2 million people.
