Two detainees managed to break the computer system's computer network and access the internal database used by police to transfer money and free days, reports observatornews.ro. Now, an internal investigation, but also a criminal one, will determine how the two managed to enter the prisons servers.

The first incident took place at Târgu Jiu Penitentiary. According to the quoted source, the detainee, convicted for cyber offenses, would have used an infochioş within the prison and would have logged in with the account of a policeman who had not updated his password. In this way, the internal application would have accessed, transferring money from the accounts of other detainees and granting free days.

“Including to be able to give to a prisoner or even days I win. […] He tried to do this too, to give days to win another prisoner, he was scared […] And thanks to this event, we managed to identify the person in question ”, explained FSANP president Cosmin Dorobantu.

The cell colleagues, in front of which the detainee would have been praised, denounced it to the penitentiary agents.

A similar case occurred at the Dej Penitentiary Hospital, where another boarding prisoner would have accessed, from a tablet, the database of the unit secretariat.

The application, implemented “fast forward”

Trade unionists say that breaches are caused by the vulnerabilities of the internal system application.

“The application was implemented in 2023, quickly before, because I was losing some European money on the POCA project. It was implemented without procedures and without instructions for using the application, obviously created a series of vulnerabilities in its use,” added Dorobantu.

Following the incident from Târgu Jiu, ANP announced that “the legal measures necessary for isolating and remedying the situation were taken, with the notification of the competent bodies”. According to the institution, “until now, no similar events have been recorded at the level of the penitentiary administration.”

The officials of the National Penitentiary Administration are carrying out internal checks, and in the case of the detention at the Târgu Jiu Penitentiary they also opened a criminal case. It risks staying closed for another 7 years for illegal access to a restricted computer system

The detention in Târgu Jiu risks an additional sentence of up to seven years for illegal access to a restricted computer system.
