Folk calendar

Mikhail Solomenny

On this day, the memory of Michael, a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church, the first Metropolitan of Kyiv, is celebrated.

An interesting custom was widespread in Rus': on the day of Michael, young women burned their straw beds – some in ovens, some in barns. This action was given a mystical meaning: supposedly such a ritual protects from the evil eye. But there is also a rational explanation: over the summer, the straw beds had become quite worn out, dirty, and harmful insects could live in them, so it was time to replace them with new ones, since there was a lot of straw in the fall. However, the old women burned only bast shoes – “to give way to winter.”

By the way, Russian people treated straw with respect. They said that it absorbs earthly and solar power. And the straw shaken out of the mattress was used to judge the health of its owner.

It was also customary for Michael to bathe children on the doorstep. It was believed that this would protect them from diseases in winter.

On this day we looked at the signs: if the first snow falls on Mikhail, it means that winter will not come soon. If by this time all the cranes have flown south, it means that winter will be early and cold.
