Paul Biya, the oldest president in office in the world, is applying for an eighth term, on Sunday, at the presidential elections that take place in Cameroon, Central Africa, informs DPA, quoted by Agerpres.

Biya, 92 years old, is the President of the State of 1982 and is the great favorite of the presidential elections on Sunday, notes AFP. There are 11 candidates, including the former minister and spokesman for the 76 -year -old Issa Tchiroma Bakary government, who arouses unexpected enthusiasm.

The eight million cameramers called to vote between local hours 08:00 and 18:00, for this single round. The results are expected to be announced two weeks after the elections. The winner will be the candidate who receives the most votes.

Of the approximately 30 million inhabitants of Cameroon, 8 million are registered voters, representing only a little over half of the people with voting rights.

Biya received 71% of the votes in 2018, according to official results, while the second -seat candidate received 14%.

Camerun is a multipartite democracy, but the opposition, civil society and freedom of expression and the media are severely restricted. In a conflict between the Francophone and the Anglophone regions of the country, at least 6,500 people were killed and about 600,000 have been displaced since 2017. The north is still affected by the attacks of the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram in Nigeria.
