Tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Media: 12 soldiers dead

Why did the attack occur?

The attack was in response to a Pakistani attack on Taliban positions near the Afghan-Pakistani border, Tolo News reports. The main fighting will take place in the provinces of Kunar, Nangarhar and Helmand. The Taliban attacked Pakistani border positions from several directions, forcing the army to retreat.

What information did the Afghan army provide?

“The armed forces of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan conducted a successful retaliatory operation against Pakistani security forces along the notional Durand Line in response to repeated violations of Afghan territory by the Pakistani army and airstrikes on Afghan territory,” reads the official X of the Afghan military.

Afghans warn that “if the other side violates Afghanistan's territorial integrity again, our armed forces will be ready to defend the country's sovereignty and will respond decisively.”

Afghanistan has been contesting the border with Pakistan for decades, called the “Durand Line”, drawn by the British colonial authorities in the 19th century, Reuters recalled. However, it is considered artificial because it divides the areas inhabited by Pashtuns into two countries.
