The director of the Kyiv Department of Education was outraged by the language of the Russian Federation in the survey by the Ministry of Education and Science. These are her own settings

The official published a printed survey about monitoring internships in institutions of general secondary education in a Google form from the Ministry of Education and Science, where in the free field under the questions there was a line in which in Russian it was indicated to enter your answer there.

“We received another order from the Ministry of Education and Science to fill out the data. What I like most is the line “my answer”. I’m thinking about the answer…” Fidanyan’s message says.

Former educational ombudsman Sergei Gorbachev explained on Facebook that the reason for the Russian language is in the browser settings of the official herself.

“Simply put: the official’s browser is configured in Russian. And Madam Director hates the Ministry of Education and Science for what she herself did. A very striking case when one’s own bias and ignorance make a “serious person” look funny. Well, there is a question about Madam Director’s ability to adequately perceive reality: because under her message several people wrote at once that the reason is not in the Ministry of Education and Science, but in the settings Ms. Fidanyan's browser. But no: the official doesn’t pay attention to this – the message still remains on her page,” he wrote.

Context

The Constitution of Ukraine defines Ukrainian as the only state language, while guaranteeing the free use of Russian and other minority languages.

Since July 2019, the law on the functioning of Ukrainian as the state language has been in force. It establishes the mandatory use of Ukrainian in government bodies, local government and the public sphere.

From January 2021, all service providers are required to serve customers in the state language. At the request of the consumer, you can switch to another language if this suits both parties.

The language law does not regulate private communication and religious practices.

According to the previous language ombudsman Taras Kremen, in 2024 the number of complaints about violations of language legislation decreased compared to 2023 and 2022.
