Tajani said on October 7 that Italy would submit a proposal to the UN for an Olympic truce for all wars, “including Ukraine and the Middle East” (quoted by ANSA).
“We support such a call. In addition, it is worth recalling that the Russian Federation started a number of wars during the Olympic Truce. Russia launched an invasion of Georgia during the Olympic Truce, and Russia began an invasion of Ukraine during the Olympic Truce,” Tikhy said.
According to him, the Russian Federation does not choose this time by chance, because the media’s attention is then focused on sporting events, which means “crimes can be committed in the shadow of these events.”
“It is very important, firstly, not to let Russia [это] do again, and secondly, we support the call for a truce. And, by the way, we are ready for a truce with Russia. Not necessarily waiting for the Olympics. We are ready now for a ceasefire,” Tikhy noted.
He recalled that Ukraine accepted such a proposal from the United States, but Russia “continues to ignore it.”
“If Russia needs an Olympic truce for this, let it be an Olympic truce. But we, in principle, insist that this happen earlier than the Olympics,” the speaker of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasized.
According to Tikhy, the statement by the head of the Italian Foreign Ministry is aimed at “stimulating Russia towards the peace process.”
