The US Federal Government has granted 10 contracts, in the amount of $ 4.5 billion, for the construction of another 230 miles (370 km) of the protective wall along the Southwest Border of the United States, the Department of Internal Security (DHS) said on Friday, Reuters, taken over by Agerpres.

The so-called “smart wall” system (intelligent wall) of border security includes steel barriers, floating barriers, patrol roads, lighting, surveillance cameras and advanced detection technology, according to the statement.

Seven of the ten contracts, which were awarded in September, go to BCCG Joint Venture.

“The intelligent wall means other miles of barriers, more technology and more capability for our field agents. This is how to take border control,” said Commissioner Rodney Scott, quoted in the statement.

The head of DHS, Kristin Noem, has issued two authorizations for nine miles of intelligent wall in the San Diego sector and for about 30 miles in New Mexico, inside the El Paso sector, “to reduce bureaucracy and accelerate the construction of the intelligent wall,” the statement said.

It is not clear yet why the permits were needed. Such documents are sometimes used to bypass certain environmental laws or other fields, Reuters mentions.
