Former president Traian Băsescu criticized the Government's measures, on Saturday, on Romania TV, and claims that “there was no need for tax increases, but for the reduction of expenses” of the state, reports News.ro.
Băsescu claims that taxation has increased “everywhere”.
“I was trying to put myself in the situation of a man who has a pension of 2,000 lei. The tax on the house has doubled, or even more, the tax on the car has also exploded. There are additional taxes on dividends. Wherever the Romanian moves, he is hit with an increased tax. That's why I think he made a big mistake with this solution,” said the former president.
“The big deficit was created on pensions and salaries, and on the famous increases”
Traian Băsescu believes that “it is not correct” how it was done, because “the private sector had no contribution” in the increase of the budget deficit.
“The big deficit was created on pensions and salaries, and on the famous increments, this means that an operation had to be done here. Only budget money was used from the reserve to increase the increments or salaries. Why didn't you just go there? Why are you putting the whole economy, the entire private sector to participate in the recovery of some money that was recklessly given so that you, PSD, or you, PNL, could win the elections?”, Băsescu also declared.
The former president said that in 2010, when there were also problems with the level of the budget deficit, the measures targeted “the area that generated the deficit”, not the private sector.
He is of the opinion that the current measures could be implemented gradually, since their simultaneous introduction puts the citizen “in an extremely difficult situation”.
Last but not least, Traian Băsescu stated that President Nicusor Dan “distances himself from the Government” regarding the fiscal measures adopted.
