Russia said that Serbia “responsively” helped the Kursk region, mentioning the “centuries-old brotherhood”

We are talking about financial assistance in the amount of 472 million rubles.

As the Russian Foreign Ministry clarified, the Serbian money went to the Kursk Region Development Fund, which helps local people affected by the war unleashed by Russia itself.

“The Russian side expresses gratitude to friendly Serbia for its attention and responsiveness, and indifference to the fate of Russian citizens. This has special symbolism, reflecting the centuries-old brotherhood, close ties between our countries and peoples,” the message says.

Serbia has not yet commented on the message.

Context

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, in particular from the Kursk region. In August 2023, the defense forces began a special operation in the Kursk region to create a buffer zone there.

Official Belgrade demonstrates a pro-Russian foreign policy. In particular, on February 24, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that his country accidentally voted for the European resolution demanding that the Russian Federation withdraw its troops from Ukraine. He added that “Serbia should have abstained.” After this, he made a number of other anti-Ukrainian statements.
