Folk calendar
Savvaty Pchelnik
On this day, the memory of Savvatiy Solovetsky is celebrated – the venerable of the Russian Orthodox Church and the founder of the Solovetsky Monastery.
In Rus', Savvatiya marked the end of the Bee Nine Days – nine days during which the bees need to be prepared for winter. Beekeepers were cleaning up the last hives in the Omshaniks and asking their children to pray to Saint Sabbatius. The fact is that beekeeping and beekeeping were considered activities that required special moral purity, which young children possessed.
The Russian people had many sayings and proverbs about bees and their main product – honey. Among them are the following: “They love an apple tree for its apples, a bee for its honey”; “The beekeeper is bitter, but his honey is sweet”; “Butter is sweet, but honey is better”; “Eat the omelet with honey.” Honey was also mentioned in jokes: “Our daughter-in-law is cracking everything: she eats honey too.” They believed that on Savvatiya the queen bee carried away the keys to summer to warmer climes. They said about her: “Not a girl, not a widow, not a husband’s wife. She leads children and feeds people.”
To engage in work other than that related to beekeeping was considered a great sin on this day. They said that everything done today would not be beneficial.
