The last 12 months contrast with the result in 2024. Back then, WIG20 was below the mark by over 6%. Interestingly, in the last decade, the rate of return exceeded 30% only once. — it was in 2023. However, there were several years with a negative balance of up to 20%. (2011, 2015, 2022).
In the 21st century, the worst year was the crisis of 2008. Then the WIG20 lost almost 50 percent of its value. In turn, three years earlier was the best time for investors so far. Then WIG20 gained 35%.
However, this is far from historical records. They are very high. In 1996. WIG20 quotations increased by over 80%. However, it was an early stage of development of the entire stock exchange in Poland.

Polish stock exchange in 2025. State-owned companies on the rise, but not only them
The excellent WIG20 result is only an average. Among the 20 largest companies on the domestic stock exchange, there were those that increased their market value by 100 percent. This limit was definitely exceeded by two representatives of State Treasury companies. I'm talking about Orlen and the copper giant with the KGHM logo.
Rounding out the podium of companies with the highest rates of return in 2025 is mBankwhose capitalization increased by over 90%. The popular Pepco store brand was close to this result.
By 50-60 percent the value of state financial sector giants increased in a year. We are talking about three: PKO BP, Pekao and PZU.
Out of 20 companies, only one ends 2025 below the mark. It is the largest shoe manufacturer in Poland – CCC shares decreased by approximately one third.
