It is also widely known that Putin's ambitions in Eastern Europe go far beyond Ukraine. The Russian leader wants to restore the territory once occupied by the Soviet Union, and even to the resurrection of the former Russian Empire.
Already in 2007, during the Munich Safety Conference, Putin gave a speech in Munich, in which he announced the rejection of the European security system and a return to imperial policy.
Experts today see potential preparations in various Russia activities. What does that really mean? Here are the three most important points:
According to military experts, one of the most striking signals are the repetitive warnings of the Russian intelligence service (SWR) against alleged operations under a false flag. Recently, SWR stated that Great Britain is planning, together with pro -Ukrainian forces, an attack on a Ukrainian or civilian ship in the European port, to then accuse Russia.
Observers interpret these statements as part of the psychological war, addressed to both their own society and to the West. It aims to “justify Russia's future future aggression against NATO and gaining public opinion for her.”
2. Provocations to NATO countries
According to ISW, the next aspect of “phase 0” is the severity of provocation towards NATO countries. In recent weeks, incidents such as the invasion of Russian drones and fighters into NATO airspace has intensified. Analysts perceive this as an attempt to arouse fear among the European population and weaken the alliance's determination.
There is no shortage of examples from the last month. On the night of September 9-10, the Polish Operational Command of the Armed Forces informed that during the Russian Federation attack on Ukraine, the Polish airspace was repeatedly violated by drones.
As emphasized, “this is an act of aggression that created a real threat to the safety of our citizens.” Defense procedures were immediately launched on the order of the Operational Commander of the Armed Forces.
It is known that the action was attended by, among others Two F-16 fighters, two Dutch F-35, Mi-24, M-17 and Black Hawk helicopters. NATO announced that German Patriot systems stationed in Poland have been ready.
In the second half of September, drones disrupted the air traffic in Scandinavia and led to the temporary closure of airports in Oslo and Copenhagen. The analysis of the Danish media shows that they could fly from a ship associated with Russia. Journalists selected up to three suspicious units floating in the Baltic Sea.
3. Military structure
According to ISW, in the structure of the Russian army you can see signs of preparation for a possible conflict with NATO:
Especially the last point is interpreted as a sign that President Vladimir Putin is not interested in the rapid end of the war in Ukraine, but is preparing for a long -term conflict with the West.
Earlier, the American Think-Tank alerted about reports regarding Russia building a strategic reserve based on recruits, which would indicate that the Kremlin is not interested in the end of the war in Ukraine and may prepare for the conflict with NATO.
Despite these events today, ISW experts emphasize that Currently, there are no signs of the approaching war between Russia and NATO. “Phase 0” mainly serves influence and preparations – both in your own country and in the West.
