Former Minister of Health Alexandru Rafila says that there are not many people eager to become director of a public health.

Alexandru Rafila was asked, on Monday night, at Medika TV, about changing the way the heads of the Public Health Directorate are called.

“Here I have a slightly more complex problem. It's not just about appointment. First of all, who wants to be head of DSP? Do you think there are many amateurs? No,” said Rafila, quoted by News.ro.

The former Minister of Health explained that the salary of a head of DSP reaches 7,000 lei, so there are no doctors who want this function.

“Why? Because the salary of a director of public health department is a maximum of 7,000 lei. And then no doctor, who has a double salary, goes to be director of public health. And we have at the Directorate of Public Health all kinds of professions.

Rafila said that more than 20 years ago it was mandatory for the DSP director to be a doctor.

“When I entered the public health system in 2001, it was mandatory to be a doctor, the director. It is not a competition, it is about the status. Because the director of the Public Health Directorate is a civil servant and he has many doctors, laboratory, epidemiologists, who earn twice as much as he is. Chicken, even with a delegation, even in the competition ”, said the former Minister of Health.
