The European Union has decided on driving licenses, their validity time, but also medical examinations for seniors. For some time there has been a discussion that slightly older drivers should undergo medical examination for driving license to confirm the ability to drive.

According to the MotoSzenia.interia.pl website, the latest arrangements between Poland and the European Parliament stipulate that the digital version of the driving license will be recognized in all European Union countries. In addition, it was established that documents entitling to drive passenger cars and motorcycles would be valid for a maximum of 15 years.
The new regulations will include both newly issued driving licenses and those that have previously been indefinite. In Poland, indefinite documents were issued until January 19, 2013, while later they had a specific 15-year expiry period.
Slightly more age -old drivers were interested in whether the European Union would give Member States to the introduction of compulsory medical examinations for seniors. Ultimately, it was decided to a solution that is not as strict as some drivers were afraid of.

As explained by the MotoSzenia.interia.pl website, the issue of medical examinations for seniors was partly related to the validity of the documents themselves. It was ultimately established that persons with indefinite driving license would be required to replace it, and this process would start in 2028.
It is important for drivers that the first exchange will not require medical examinations. The European Union has not decided to introduce compulsory medical examinations for all drivers.

A slightly unexpected aspect of new regulations is to transfer some rights to family doctors. They will be obliged to inform the relevant bodies about patients whose health may pose a threat to road safety.
Although the rules have been agreed, it is not sure if and what solutions the Polish authorities will take. It may turn out that our country will decide on medical examinations that will be necessary when extending the driving license.
