A proportional fire broke out on Thursday night at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo, near Los Angeles, in California, according to the American press, writes Reuters.
The cause of the incident is not known, said Los Angeles Times, while the CBS television station informed that police and firefighters have emergency to refinery after receiving information about an explosion.
A witness told CBS that the explosion was felt as a small earthquake.
The police in El Segundo had no information about victims or evacuations, the source added.
The refinery has its own fire unit. According to the Chevron site, El Segundo refinery was built in 1911. The installation produces 276,000 bars of oil per day and “it is the largest oil refinery on the West Coast,” Chevron representatives wrote on the company's website.
El Segundo is a few kilometers from Las Angeles Airport.
The representatives of the airport said that the fire did not affect its operations. No flight was canceled, deflected or delayed immediately after the fire.
