The end of the “sanitary cordon” around the extreme right in France. The Marine Le Pen party is gaining key positions again in parliament

MPs of the National Union Sebastien Chen and Helene Laporte will act as the Vice -President of the National Assembly, a more influential Chamber of Lower French Parliament. This duo already held these high positions in 2022–2024. They are associated with determining the agenda of the National Assembly, updating its internal regulations and imposing sanctions on members.

Traditionally, managerial positions in the French parliament are to reflect the political composition of this body.

However, during last year's early parliamentary elections, the center and left -wing parties cooperated to prevent the extreme right from winning. Both sides then joined forces again to pick up the LE PEN party the highest positions in the National Assembly.

In the summer, the largest parliamentary group supporting Macron, together for the Republic, has changed her current position on the exclusion of the extreme right, arguing that the firewall led to a disproportionate representation of leftist groups.

Yael Braun-Pivet, allied with Macron, chairwoman of the National Assembly, supported the return of the extreme right in a clip published on social media.

“In the temple of democracy, every voice represented in parliament should also be present in its management bodies,” she said.
