The President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, is prepared to declare an emergency due to the threat of a “aggression” from the US, said the vice -president of the country, Delcy Rodriguez, on Monday, in the context of the series of attacks executed by the American army on some venezuelan boats suspected of drug trafficking.

Rodriguez told foreign diplomats that Maduro has signed a decree that gives him “special powers” as head of state to act in defense and security if the United States “dare to attack our homeland.”

However, a government source told AFP that Maduro has not yet signed the document.

“The vice -president presented the document to show that everything is ready and that the president can decree at any time,” explained the source, speaking under the condition of anonymity.

Large American military conduct

The left -wing authoritarian leader in Venezuela has placed the country on alert due to the major US military unfolding near the Venezuelan coasts.

The Trump administration has sent eight war vessels and a submarine with nuclear propulsion in the south of the Caribbean, as part of a declared plan to combat drug trafficking.

American forces have destroyed at least three suspected drug trafficking in the Caribbean Sea in recent weeks, killing 14 people in a qualified action as an “extrajudicial execution” by UN experts.

Currently, US military officials are drawing options to target drug traffickers inside Venezuelan borders, according to the American NBC publication, which cites four sources familiar with discussions.

The declaration of the state of emergency would allow Maduro, whose victory declared after last year's elections was not recognized by a large part of the international community, to temporarily suspend the fundamental rights of the Venezuelans.

Vice -President of Venezuela said that it is confident that the population will be united behind Maduro.

“Venezuela is united in the defense of our country,” she said. “We will never teach our homeland,” Rodriguez concluded.
