“I could do this before the elections, I received all the necessary forms, but I preferred not to do it so as not to give the impression of an electoral gesture. I will do it after the poll”, a stated Basescu in an interview with Digi24.
The former head of the state became a Moldovan citizen in November 2016, together with his wife, Maria Basescu, by a decree signed by the then president, Nicolae Timofti.
Citizenship was later withdrawn by Igor Dodon, on the grounds that it was obtained by violating the law. However, his wife kept the quality of Moldovan citizen and voted at elections on Sunday.
Traian Basescu challenged in court the decision to withdraw citizenship, but without success.
By his gesture, the former president reaffirms his desire to maintain the connection with the Republic of Moldova, while avoiding any political interpretation during the electoral period.
