The former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, Tang Renjian, was sentenced to death on Sunday with a two -year suspension of the sentence for accepting bribes with an equivalent of over $ 37 million – the state media donated.

The court of first instance in Changchun, in the province of Jilin in the northeast of China, decided that in the period from 2007 to 2024 Tang used his positions, including As the Minister of Agriculture and Vice -President of the Autonomous Government of the Kuangsi region, to help companies and private individuals in conducting business activities, acquiring engineering contracts and changes in positions. In return, he “unlawfully accepted assets with a total value of over 268 million yuan” (approx. 37.6 million USD).
The court ruled that the deeds committed by the convicted person caused “particularly serious losses for the interests of the state and the nation” because “the amount of bribes was extremely high.”
Pursuant to the Chinese law, the death penalty will be converted to a sentenced to a lifetime prison after two years, provided that Tang is not guilty of other crimes.
Justifying the suspended death penalty, the court took into account that the former minister “honestly confessed his crimes” and “actively returned most of the illegal profits.” He was also condemned to lifetime deprivation of political rights and confiscation of all personal property.
Tang was removed from the position and covered by the anti -corruption investigation in 2024.
His process is another element of the anti -corruption campaign conducted by the leader of the PRC XI Jinping, who repeatedly warned that corruption was a “greatest threat” to the communist party of China. Supporters of this draconian policy emphasize that the raw materials of punishment result in cleansing the elites of persons committing crimes. Opponents believe that such activities allow XI to remove potential political opponents.
