Cardinal was born on April 15, 1938 in Tunisia in a family of emigrants from Sicily. She starred in more than 150 films and was a muse of Italian directors Federico Fellini and Lukino Visconti.
Cardinal in his youth was considered a sex symbol of Italian cinema, she was called The icon of the style of its time.
The actress was a laureate of many cinematographic awards, including the Golden Bear (2002), the Sergey Parajanov Prize (2010). She was awarded the Golden Lion Prize (1993), as well as state awards of Italy and France.
