US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian counterpart, Volodimir Zelenski will have a face -to -face meeting on Tuesday, September 23, in New York, the White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt announced at a press conference.

The meeting will take place in the margin of the 80th general meeting of the United Nations (UN), which will bring leaders from nearly 150 countries.

In addition to the meeting with Zelenski, Trump will have bilateral discussions with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Getterres, the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, and with high officials of the European Union. The US President will also convene a multilateral summit with leaders in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

Trump is expected to take a speech at the opening of the 80th Sile of the UN General Assembly, Leavitt said.

The last face -to -face meeting between Trump and Zelenski took place on August 17, during a meeting with important European leaders who came to the White House, just two days after the US president met his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Alaska.

Trump has promised to prepare direct discussions between Zelenski and Putin, but the effort of the US leader failed when the Russian president proposed that Zelenski came to Moscow and rejected other meeting places, The Kyiv Independent recalls.

In a statement on September 15, Trump noted that “the hatred between Zeenski and Putin is impenetrable”, suggesting that it may need to intervene to facilitate the direct discussions between the two leaders.

Kiev refused the proposal on organizing negotiations in Moscow, and Putin later stated that an agreement on occupied territories is “impossible”. Zelenski has reiterated that he will not travel to Russia for negotiations, but repeatedly expressed his willingness to meet a little on neutral ground.

Despite threatening to impose tougher measures to Moscow, Trump has so far applied only secondary rates for his Russian oil purchases.
