The protest in the Netherlands against immigration turned into riots. “Idiots”

Thousands of people went out into the streets of the Malieveld district, demanding an exacerbation of immigration policy, but, according to local media, the tension increased when the protesters began to throw bottles and stones, set fire to police cars and rub with policemen.

The protesters also headed towards the center of Hagi and struck the windows of the Liberal Party of the D66 party, as Dutch Nose TV said. To distract the participants of the riots, the police used tear gas and water cannons.

Violent protests caused a sharp reaction of Dutch politicians both left and right -wing.

The Dutch Minister of Security and Justice Fort Van Oosten called violence against the police “absolutely unacceptable”.

“Demonstrations are a great thing in the Netherlands, but hands from our officers!” – Van Oosten wrote on social media.

The leader of the extreme right Geert Wilders also condemned violence, calling protesters “idiots”.

Frans Timmermans, a former European Commissioner and the current leader of the Dutch alliance of the Labor Party and Green Party, called this “a situation from the Trump's era, fueled by politicians who sow fear and division.”

“Silence is not at stake. You have to speak,” wrote Timmermans on social media.
