Washington objected to the resolution
According to the Un News portal, the meeting took place in the shadow of the spreading hunger in the besieged enclave and the ongoing Israeli offensive, which aims to take full control over the city of Gaza. Speaking before the vote, the deputy of the permanent US representative at the UN, Morgan Ortagus, said that Washington's opposition to the resolution “will not be a surprise” because it does not condemn Hamas or recognize Israel's right to defend.
– The text also incorrectly legitimizes false narratives in favor of Hamas, which unfortunately found their place in the council. (…) The resolution also strives to return to a failed system that allowed Hamas to enrich and strengthen at the expense of the needy civilian population – Ortagus argued.
Denmark's ambassador Christina Markus Lassen said that although no resolution was accepted, 14 members of the Council sent a clear signal.
– We want immediate and permanent suspension of weapons, immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and urgent abolition of all restrictions on humanitarian aid. We will continue to strive for this during subsequent meetings of the Council – announced the Danish diplomat.
