Three Russian MiG-31 fighters flew into the airspace of Estonia near the island of Vaindloo on the Gulf of Finnish on Friday morning and remained there for about 12 minutes.
Estonia decided to submit an application regarding the launch of consultation pursuant to art. 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty in connection with the interference of Russian fighters in the Estonian airspace – said Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal on Friday in the entry on Platform X.
Art. 4 NATO is as follows: “The parties will consult together whenever any of them, territorial integrity, political independence or security of either party will be at risk.”
NATO was launched in September by the Eastern Sentry mission to strengthen the eastern flank of the Alliance. This is a new, more integrated approach to defending this part of NATO territory. As part of the mission, among others Danish f-16 fighters, French Rafale and German Eurofightery.
NATO's decision is the result of what happened on the night of September 9-10, i.e. the invasion of Russian drones into the Polish airspace. The decision took place after the meeting of the North Atlantic Council, during which allies discussed the situation in the light of Poland's application for consultation pursuant to Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
