Andrzej Sapkowski awarded with the Gold Medal “Merit to Culture Gloria Artis”

Writer Andrzej Sapkowski, the creator of the Saga about The Witcher Geralt and one of the most popular fantasy authors, was awarded on Monday by Minister of Culture Marta Cienkowska with the gold medal “Merit to the culture of Gloria Artis”.


Sapkowski's books were translated into nearly 20 languages - including to English, German, French, Italian, Belarusian, Hungarian and Chinese. As reminded in the press release about the award of the writer, he gained popularity due to the “series of stories and the five -volume saga about The Witcher Geralt”.
First story “The Witcher” was published in December 1986 in the monthly “Fantasy”. The popularity of his work translated into film screenings, series, comics, musical and video games created on its basis. “In 2017, the shooting of the series based on Sapkowski's prose and the” Witcher “set in the world announced Netflix. The premiere of the first season of the series took place on December 20, 2019, the second – on December 17, 2021, and the third – in June 2023, the photos for the fourth season ended in October 2024.” – recalled the Ministry of Culture.
The saga about “The Witcher” – emphasized – was honored with awards in the country and abroad, including World Fantasy Award, and a collection of stories entitled “The last wish” was on the New York Times bestseller list. The writer is also the author of novels from the series about Reinmar from Bielawa “Hussite Trilogy”, an essay about the knights of the Round Table entitled “The world of King Arthur. Maladie”, a lexicon of a fantasy lover entitled “Manuscript found in a dragon cave”, a guide for people starting to play feature games entitled “OKO YRRhedes”.
In 2012, Sapkowski was awarded the silver medal “Merit to culture Gloria Artis”, and in 2023 he received the annual award of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage in the “Literature” category. (PAP)
