Electrica, the largest energy supplier in Romania, and the national gas producer, Romgaz, have signed a memorandum of understanding for the development of energy production and storage capacities from renewable sources with a total installed power of up to 400 MW. The projects will be built from scratch.
“This initiative is based on the convergence between the operational skills and the energy production capacity of the two companies, generating a proposal of distinct value on the regional market.
The partnership will be implemented through a dedicated investment vehicle, in which Electrica will have the role of main developer, and Romgaz will act as a minority strategic partner. The chosen structure allows the use of strategic complementarities between the two entities ”, according to a statement of companies.
Electrica provides energy for 4 million customers and manages an energy distribution network covering 40% of the national territory.
The company has already invested in renewable energy production projects, having operational 46.5 MW. The target is 1 GW in production and 900 MWh in storage by 2030.
“The collaboration between Electrica and Romgaz contributes to the acceleration of the transition to a green economy”
“This partnership marks a defining moment in our Electrica 2030 strategy. After the success of the green bonds of 500 million euros in July 2025 and the access of 200 million EURO Funding, this collaboration with Romgaz demonstrates that the cooperation models between the Romanian energy companies can significantly accelerate the transition.
We combine the financial force with the technical expertise to develop with Romgaz 400 MW Green capacity, which will contribute directly to the national renewable energy target by 2030, ”said Alexandru Chiriță, the general manager of Electrica.
A year ago, Electrica announced that it plans to build a huge energy storage battery at Fântânele, Mures County, with 22 million euros.
“Today, Romgaz takes an important step in the direction of his strategy of diversification and energy transition. The memorandum signed with Electrica confirms our commitment for clean energy investments and strengthening the role of pillar of Romania's energy security,” said Răzvan Popescu, CEO Romgaz.
Romgaz is the largest gas producer in Romania and explores, together with OMV Petrom, the perimeter of high depth Deep in the Black Sea, where the gas production will start in 2027.
The memorandum lays the foundations for a collaboration that takes advantage of a favorable moment on the market: the combination of already mature technology, access to financing and the need to reduce emissions.
The final transaction depends on the necessary checks and internal approvals.
