Vladimir Putin wants to terminate the convention about prevention of torture


The application for termination of the Convention was presented to the president on August 26, the government of the Russian Federation, and it was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Miszustin.

Moscow's step was sharply criticized by the head of Ukrainian diplomacy Andriy Sybiha. – The Russian government's decision to leave the Convention once again shows that Russia is a place of lawlessness where life and human dignity mean nothing – he wrote on Platform X.

Russia has been a party to the Convention since 1996. The document, which was one of the pillars of the Human Rights Protection system of the Council of Europe, assumed independent control of places of imprisonment in the Member States. Committee delegations could be carried out by prisons, arrests or detention centers, assessing the conditions and treatment of prisoners.

The Kremlin's decision is not a surprise – already in 2022 Moscow announced a speech from the Council of Europe and announced the termination of the European Convention on Human Rights, a key document of this organization. Withdrawal from the convention against torture is another step towards the isolation of Russia from European human rights protection mechanisms.
According to experts, a departure from international obligations will further limit external control over the prison system in Russiawhere – as reporting reports of non -governmental organizations – there are numerous cases of abuse and violence against prisoners.
