In just two years, the first sports competition will be held in the new sports hall in Warsaw's Ochota district. After many years, the capital will join other Polish cities with modern halls. The facility for PLN 237.6 million will be built by Mirbud. What will the new Warsaw arena look like?

Warsaw will finally have a sports hall. First matches in two years

Only once in the last twenty years has the Warsaw sports hall hosted a match of the Polish national team. The mentioned match was a duel between Polish basketball players and Croatians, which was played at Torwar in August 2022. It happened that due to the lack of a modern arena in the capital, this role was taken over by the National Stadium. This was the case, among others, during the 2014 Men's Volleyball World Championships.

Apart from this exception, Warsaw was largely avoided by the world's largest sports events held in Polish arenas. Torwar in Warsaw last served such a function in 2009, when it hosted basketball competitions as part of the European Championships. Even then, the capacity of the hall was inferior to other facilities in Poland. In the following years, modern halls were built, among others: in Gdańsk and Sopot, Kraków, Gliwice, Częstochowa, Szczecin, Toruń and Zielona Góra.

The end of the wanderings of the Warsaw teams

However, this may soon change due to the construction of a modern sports hall in Warsaw's Ochota district. The facility will be built at ul. Wawelska on the Skra premises, and work is scheduled to start in spring this year, so that the first sports competitions can be held in autumn 2028.

Warsaw clubs will therefore not have to wander around the arenas in Bemowo, Ursynów or Koło and occasionally use Torwar, which was modernized in the last century. Suffice it to say that the current Polish champions – Legia Warszawa basketball players have the third smallest hall in the league as their home arena. Only the newcomer from Krosno and another team from the capital – Dziki Warszawa – which plays its matches in the hall in Koło, have a smaller facility than the OSiR Bemowo Hall.

What will the new hall in Ochota look like?

The new Warsaw hall will accommodate 6,000. people, will have an area of 9.8 thousand. sq m and volume of 88.1 cubic meters. The facility will constitute part of the recreational area connecting Skra's sports areas with Pole Mokotowskie, and the construction of the sports hall will be the second stage of the investment. The hall will be built by Mirbud for PLN 237.6 million.

Importantly, unlike Torwar, the facility will be intended exclusively for organizing sports events – including: basketball and volleyball matches of Warsaw teams.

The next stage of the investment is to be the modernization of the Skra athletics stadium. During the first stage, among others, were built: a rugby pitch, a training stadium for athletes and a revitalized green area connecting Skra's new sports areas with Pole Mokotowskie.
