On Sunday night there will be a rare astronomical event – a total lunar eclipse, which will be visible from Romania. In the whole phase, the moon gets a reddish color. The Astronomical Observatory in Bucharest has announced that it will be open between 8:00 pm and 24:00, but warned that it is possible to form queues.
The next total visible lunar eclipse in Romania will be over three years and will take place on New Year's Eve. Specifically, on the evening of December 31, 2028, and the maximum time will be 18.52.
The total lunar eclipse of September 7, 2025 – at what time is it best
The most spectacular part of the Sunday phenomenon, September 7, is the totality – the period when the moon will be in the shadow of our planet and will acquire the specific reddish color. The whole starts at 8:30 pm, has a maximum at 21:21 and ends at 21:52. During this phase, the Moon will be quite down in the sky, towards East-Sud-East, explains the astronomical observer in Bucharest.
All the phases of the eclipse last almost five and a half hours, but the most interesting stage, all, lasts an hour and 22 minutes. The eclipse ends at 23:55.
Also on September 7, the full moon phase is produced at 9:09 pm
The Bucharest Astronomical Observatory will be open until midnight
“On Sunday, September 7, there is a total moon, visible eclipse of our country.
We inform you that, usually, during astronomical phenomena, long tails are formed at the entrance to the observer, so expect to be tail ”, announced the representatives of the Astronomical Observatory in Bucharest.
“The phenomenon begins with the entrance of the Moon into the penumbra, at 18:28, when the Moon will be under the horizon. Because the penumbra of the Earth is not very opaque, at the beginning of the color phenomenon it will not change much. In Bucharest, the Moon will rise at 7:37 pm, when it is already in the shadow of the Earth,” according to information published on Astro-Ur.
Blood Moon – why the Moon becomes bleeding
During the totality, the light of the sun that passes through the atmosphere of the earth is deviated and scattered, filtering the blue light and leaving only the reddish wavelengths on the moon. That is why the “bloody month” is nicknamed.
Depending on the atmospheric conditions of our planet, the shade can vary from bright orange to intense red, rust. Predictions for this eclipse suggest an orange-red-red disc, because the Earth's atmosphere is now almost completely without volcanic and dense dust, it is explained in an article in the National Geographic.
A single planet can be seen in the evening in the sky
On the evening of Sunday, there is only one planet in the sky: Mars. However, it is very difficult to see because it does not have a very big glow and it is very close to the horizon when leaving the evening.
Basically, the planet can be seen about 30 minutes, since it is dark, until it sets, around 21, explains the ones from the Observatory.
