The interim mayor of Bucharest, Stelian Bujduveanu, announced that he has canceled the opinion for the protest of the new right and SOS Romania against immigrants, scheduled on Tuesday. He says that “no one is allowed to poison the society with extremist messages.”
Bujduveanu summoned the public order commission, and the opinion for the planned protest on September 2 by the New Right Association and the SOS Romania party was canceled, according to a statement of the Capital City Hall.
The analysis of the commission has shown that the manifestation would violate the legislation that prohibits the assemblies through which extremist, fascist, racist or hatred and violence are propagated.
The institution argues that, initially, the documentation submitted by the organizers indicates a topic related to the debate on the strategy of inclusion of migrants. “Subsequently, the organizers promoted explicitly anti-immigrant messages in the public space, which incites hatred and discrimination,” the statement said.
“I will not allow Bucharest to be used as a scene for hatred and division. The right to protest is guaranteed and will be respected every time, but no one is allowed to stand up the law and poison the company with extremist messages. The capital is an European city, open and solidarity – and this must be defended firmly,” said Stelian Bujduanu.
Organizer: “We will reschedule”
Contacted by Hotnews, the protest organizer, Constantin Nechita, said the protest will be rescheduled.
“We will reschedule for another time. We will not introduce ourselves tomorrow, because we have hundreds of actions, all legally organized. We have about 10-15 on the same theme. Now is the first time we are canceled,” Nechita said.
He also accused that the representatives of the City Hall of Bucharest “were subjected to pressures from the Elie Wiesel Institute, from the Accept Association, from the CNCD, and people found a solution through which they discriminated.”
The manifestation against migrants was initially approved
The protest organized by the New Right and the SOS Romania party was initially approved by the mayor of the Capital and scheduled for September 2, between 11:00 and 13:00. The demonstration is directed against the project “Strategy for the inclusion of migrants”, meanwhile withdrawn from public debate.
The organizers have published on the website of the new straight messages that speak of “immigrants of aphuric origin” and “non-European populations, exclusively non-white”.
In reply, the City Hall transmitted that “no legal reasons for rejection of the request were identified.” The institution stated that it had authorized the participation of about 20 persons and stressed that “the authorization of a public meeting does not represent the assumption or validation of the content of the messages transmitted by the organizers”.
On Monday, dozens of civic organizations and public personalities asked the National Council for Combating Discrimination (CNCD) to send a rapporteur to anti-migrant protest. The signatories claimed that the presence of the institution would help prevent the spread of hatred and discrimination to foreign workers.
