USR Dominic Fritz president told Digi24 that his party has “a qualified candidate to be the mayor of Bucharest” and it would be desirable for USR and PNL to come to the partial elections in the Capital with a common candidate.
Asked if it is possible to designate a common candidate of the USR and PNL for the position of general mayor, given that the PSD has threatened to leave the government if this happens, Dominic Fritz said that the fears of social democrats are not justified.
“Normal that there is a natural approach between PNL and USR. And Nicușor Dan was supported with the support of the two parties. Not for the second term, when PNL had a common candidate with the PSD, until they had no common candidate. The lesson of these tactical decisions is that we have to look at what the citizens of Bucharest will be. said USR president.

“We must not suspend democracy at local level”
Dominic Fritz said that the “tactical discussions” on the Bucharest election were useless if the local elections for the town halls were taking place in two elections. “Maybe that's why it is time to reopen this discussion,” said the mayor of Timisoara.
He reiterated the support for the candidacy of Cătălin Drula, the former Minister of Transport.
“The USR has a candidate in Cătălin Drulă not only qualified to be the mayor of Bucharest but also has very good chances to win and who also received encouragement from the former mayor, the current president of Romania,” said Fritz, referring to the meeting with Nicușor Dan, before announcing the intention.
As for the date of the poll, Fritz said that the elections should be organized in November, even if the PSD would like their postponement.
“The USR wants to respect the law that provides for a term that is not according to the political liking of the governors, it is a very clearly regulated term (…) We are in national level, but that does not mean that we have to suspend democracy at local level,” said USR leader.
A procedure not realized by USR
Although Dominic Fritz claims that “USR has a candidate in Cătălin Drulă” for Bucharest, in reality the party has not yet organized the internal elections to designate the candidate at the City Hall.
The USR status states: “The conference of the Bucharest Municipality Branch designates, by secret vote, the candidate for the position of general mayor of Bucharest”.
Subsequently, “the National Bureau validates or invalidates the candidate for the position of general mayor of Bucharest”, according to USR status.
None of the steps provided in the statute were fulfilled for the appointment of Cătălin Drulă as the USR candidate for the Bucharest City Hall.
