The member countries of the European Union analyze the possibility of imposing stricter requirements to companies, so that they prove where the natural gas they import were produced, the measure being part of the community block to gradually eliminate imports from Russia, a document consulted by the Reuters Agency, taken by Agerpres shows.
Last month, the European Commission proposed a legislative act aimed at eliminating oil and gas imports from Russia until January 1, 2028, as Brussels wants to end energy relations with Russia, after the invasion of Ukraine.
But to prove where natural gas comes from, which can be mixed during transit, is extremely difficult, writes Reuters.
Without going into detail, the latest negotiation proposal, consulted by Reuters, shows that Member States analyze the possibility of asking importers to provide several documents to the national authorities to prove that their gases do not come to Russia.
The EU ambassadors of the Member States will discuss this proposal at a meeting that will take place in Brussels on Tuesday.
“For imports of natural gas produced in countries other than Russia, the regulatory authorities will be provided evidence to show the country where natural gas was produced,” mentioned in this document, dated August 28.
The clause will not apply to gas imports from countries that have in turn, or have imposed sanctions, on Russian gas imports.
Stop all of Russian gas imports in the EU by 2028
According to the proposal of Brussels, the EU will eliminate the imports of Russian gas based on new contracts from January 1, 2026, and in the case of current short-term contracts from June 17, 2026, while in the case of long-term contracts from January 1, 2028.
The document was developed by the Danish presidency of the EU.
Importers of liquefied gas cargo from Russia, containing gases from various sources, would have to present documents to show how many Russian gases are in these mixed loads, they mention in the document.
The governments of the Member States intend to reach a common position regarding the Russian gases until mid -October, after which the Member States and the European Parliament will negotiate and approve the final version.
