Students studying philosophy are, on average, more reflective and more open than those who have not done it, a recent study shows
An analysis on tests and surveys that come from over 600,000 American students shows that, compared to students from all other fields, those from philosophy get higher scores on tests that measure a person to think clearly, coherently and rationally, a study published in the Journal of the American Philosophical Association shows.
High scores correlated with the study of philosophy are also at their own habits of young people, related to rational, critical and balanced thinking.
To do philosophy is to try to answer fundamental questions about humanity and the world we live in, but also to critically analyze the proposed answers.
How can our philosophy skills help us?
The skills that philosophy develops become useful in the context in which misinformation becomes a global problem, which Romania faces.
A study conducted in September by the Value School and Unlock Market Research shows that nine out of ten high school students believes that the Fake News phenomenon is a problem in Romania and almost half of them have shared information that they later learned.
Is the philosophy attractive to young Romanian?
Philosophy is a topic that no longer attracts so many students. The problem leaves even schools and high schools, where the study of philosophy was reduced “dramatic”, says Ciprian Mihali, professor of philosophy at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, in an interview with school9.
“Probably if we had the tradition or strength of education in Western countries, we would know how to value free and criticism, the autonomy of the person and the respect for the ability to discern each, values that philosophy promotes,” explained Ciprian Mihali.
The teacher also added that most of the young people who come to the Faculty of Philosophy have Had in high school experiences with “generous teachers in thinking or extraordinary books”, fact that motivated to choose this area.
