American President Donald Trump on Thursday filed a lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase, one of the largest banks in the world, demanding five billion dollars in compensation on the grounds that he was “debanked” after his supporters' assault on the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021, reports Reuters, quoted by Agerpres.
Trump's lawyer, Alejandro Brito, opened the procedure in a court in Miami, Florida, including against the general manager of the bank, Jamie Dimon, announced the Fox Business news channel, taken over by Reuters. The complaint claims that JPMorgan's decision to deny Trump banking services was made for political reasons, after his supporters violently challenged the ratification of Democrat Joe Biden's victory in the November 2020 presidential election.
The president had announced at the end of last week his intention to sue the bank.
“While we regret that President Trump has sued us, we believe the lawsuit is without merit. We respect the president's decision to sue us and our right to defend ourselves. JPMC does not close accounts for political or religious reasons. We close accounts because they create legal or regulatory risks for the company. We regret having to do so, but often the rules and regulations require us,” JPMorgan said.
The bank has expressed reservations about the Trump administration's economic policies on several occasions. Thus, in April 2025, the bank's experts estimated that, if President Donald Trump goes all the way with the application of customs duties that he predicted at the time, the American economy would have entered a recession.
A month later, a JPMorgan official said Europe was the most “stable and predictable” region for long-term investment.
