The Ministry of Education again changes the rules for merit scholarships. What students will receive money

The Ministry of Education has decided to change the methodology of school scholarships again. After the pressures of the associations of students and parents, tens of thousands of high school students will enter the list of beneficiaries of merit scholarships, even if the maximum initially established percentage is exceeded.

The Ministry of Education revises the rules regarding the granting of merit scholarships, just two weeks after they had been changed. One of the most important changes is aimed at situations in which several students have the same average as the last student in the 15% percentage of the class, eligible for the stock market.

Instead of being departed from the school, as the initial methodology provided, all the students on average equality will receive the scholarship, even if the 15% percentage will be exceeded, according to the new methodologies.

Thus, the number of beneficiaries will increase considerably. If, for example, in a class of 20 students, 15% means only 3 scholarships, if 10 students get average 10, they will all receive a merit scholarship. Therefore, if more students have the same average as the last element for the merit scholarship, everyone will be included on the list.

Scholarships and for the Olympians who entered high school without exam

Another important aspect is the recognition of the performances of the Olympics. Students who entered high school without supporting the national assessment, due to the prizes obtained at the school Olympics or international competitions, will also receive merit scholarships, even if the special exchanges for the Olympians and excellence have been eliminated.

“The merit scholarships are granted, in addition to the 15%, and to the students of each 9th grade who were admitted to high school without taking the exam, based on a first prize at the national stage of the school Olympics or a 1st or 3rd prize”,, “ provides for the new decision.

This change came after the repeated requests of the associations of students and parents, who demanded the elimination of arbitrary criteria, so that the ministry accepted that all students in equal situations be included in the scholarship list, even if the 15% percentage is exceeded.

Estimates show that, as a result of these changes, tens of thousands of students will benefit from merit scholarships.

In parallel, the Ministry of Education has also established the criteria for granting social scholarships: they will be intended for students from families with a monthly net income of up to 1,287.5 lei per member, the equivalent of half the minimum net salary per economy.
