China has pointed out to EU diplomats that she is ready to send peace forces to Ukraine in the event of a cessation of fire, Welt said, citing anonymous sources from the EU, according to The Kyiv Independent.

However, China is ready to do this only “if the peacekeeping forces were based on a mandate from the United Nations (UN),” says Welt sources.

China is the ally of Russia, according to the description made by Vladimir Putin, who met with his Beijing counterpart, Xi Jinping, more than 40 times in the last decade. In February 2022, a few days before Moscow launched the war against Ukraine, the two leaders said that between the countries they run there is a strategic “without limits” partnership, which they reaffirmed this year.

In the last week, the discussions about the Ukraine war have concentrated largely on the form of security guarantees Kiev could receive.

Ukraine emphasized the need for robust security guarantees with international support as part of any peace negotiations, accusing Russia of repeatedly violated international commitments, including prior agreements on Ukrainian sovereignty.

Mixed reactions to China's ad

According to Welt, China's announcement was met with mixed reactions, some voices of the opinion that a coalition of countries that include nations other than the traditional Western allies of Ukraine would make the perspective of a more acceptable peace force for Russia.

On the other hand, “there is also the danger of wanting China first to spy on Ukraine and, in the event of a conflict, will adopt a clearly pro-Russian position instead of a neutral position,” said a high-ranking diplomat, familiar with discussions for Welt.

The sending of foreign troops to Ukraine, as part of the support provided by a group of allies known as the “Coalition of will”, is only one of the many proposals made to ensure the respect of an armistice in the event of an agreement with Russia.

About 10 European allies are willing to send troops to Ukraine, as Bloomberg reported on August 19th. The United Kingdom, France, Lithuania and Estonia have publicly declared their willingness to take such a step.

The US has excluded the possibility of sending US troops to Ukraine, but has expressed its opening to provide other security guarantees.

NATO chief went to Kyiv

The issue of security guarantees was also addressed by NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, in the discussion with the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, on Friday, in Kiev.

“We are now working together-Ukraine, Europeans, the United States-to ensure that these security guarantees are at a level so Vladimir Vladimirovici Putin, in Moscow, never try to attack Ukraine,” Rutte said in a press conference.
