Tesla company, led by Elon Musk, is investigated for delays in reporting accidents related to driving assistance systems

The National Administration for Highway Traffic Safety (NHTSA) announced on Thursday that it opens an investigation into the delays with which Tesla reported accidents involving advanced driving assistance systems or vehicles with self-control functions, Reuters reports.
The US authority has found that numerous reports on road incidents were sent by Tesla a few months after their production, although the legislation requires their transmission within 1-5 days from notification, notes News.ro. In April, NHTSA updated and strengthened the reporting rules.
Tesla told the Agency that the delays were caused by a problem in the internal data collection process, a problem that would have already been remedied.
In some cases, the company sent reports in large lots, and in others as the information became available.
NHTSA said that it will evaluate the causes of delays, their extent and the measures taken by Tesla to correct them, as well as if there are missing reports or incomplete data.
The agency is already investigating 2.4 million Tesla vehicles with “full self-driving” technology, after reporting four low visibility conditions, including a fatal accident in 2023.
In January, another investigation into 2.6 million Tesla vehicles was opened, after stories about accidents related to the remote travel function.
Separately, NHTSA also analyzes the robotaxic service launched by Tesla in Austin, Texas, checking whether vehicles can be driven by the company's employees. Tesla has not yet offered an official comment.
