US President Donald Trump said on Friday, Air Force One, that he will introduce new tariffs on steel and chips imports, the following weeks, Reuters reports.
The White House leader said that the taxes will be initially lower, to allow companies to develop production capacities in the US, and will increase significantly later.
“I will set rates next week and the next one on steel and, I would say, on the chips. At first it will be a lower fee, to give them the chance to build here, then very high after a certain period of time,” Trump said, referring to a strategy already applied in the field of pharmaceuticals, Cites News.ro
The measure comes after, in February, its administration increased steel and aluminum tariffs to 25%, and doubled to 50% to stimulate domestic producers.
Last week, Trump also announced the intention to impose a 100% tax on semiconductor imports, except for companies that are committed to producing in the US.
The statements were made while the president was heading for Alaska for a summit with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The announcement coincided with the presentation of an additional investment of $ 100 billion that Apple will make on the US market.
