Seven elephants were killed and one injured when a Delhi-bound train collided with a herd of pachyderms in northeast India early Saturday, district police chief VV Rakesh Reddy said, according to Reuters.
The incident in Assam state's Hojai district took place in an area that is not a designated elephant corridor, the Northeast Frontier Railway said in a statement.
The locomotive engineer applied the emergency brakes when he saw the herd, but the elephants rushed towards the train, according to the company
The collision, which occurred at 2:17 a.m. local time, derailed the locomotive and five carriages of the train, but no one was injured, the statement said.
“Trains that were due to pass through that section are being diverted to another line. Repair work is ongoing,” the railway company said.
