The letter was handed over by President Trump directly to Putin, in Anchorage, in Alaska, two white house officials, quoted by Reuters, said on Friday. Melania Trump did not accompany the president on this visit.
Although the exact content was not made public, the officials said that the document refers to the problem of Ukrainian children in the context of the war. The existence of the letter had not been mentioned above.
The subject is an extremely sensitive one for Kiev, who accuses Moscow of deporting tens of thousands of minors in Russia or occupied territories, without the consent of parents or legal guardians. Ukraine considers these actions a war crime and an act of genocide, according to UN treaties.
Moscow has rejected the accusations, claiming to protect vulnerable children from a conflict area. However, the UN Human Rights Office has transmitted that Russia has caused suffering and violations of fundamental rights for millions of Ukrainian children from the beginning of the invasion of 2022.
The Trump -Putin meeting, held on Friday for almost three hours at the US military base, did not lead to an armistice agreement on the Ukraine war, Reuters notes.
