From March, the Dutch Customs Service has taken over 400,000 counterfeit Labubu mascots, including 250,000 at the Amsterdam Schiphol airport. Popular toys are counterfeited as cheaper laffu and – according to experts – they are often made of hazardous materials, posing a threat to children.

According to the Public Portal of the broadcaster, about 150,000 Labubu counterfeit mascots were found in ports, on borders and other control points.
Original mascots are produced by a Chinese POP Mart based on the design of the artist Kaising Lunga, brought up in the Netherlands.

Labubu, part of a series of books and toys “The Monsters”, has gained worldwide popularity, among others Thanks to celebrities such as Lalisa Manoban from the South Korean group Blackpink, Rihanna or Kim Kardashian. Prices reach several hundred euros, which promotes the development of the fake market – cheaper but inferior quality laffu.
Forted copies often have errors in subtitles, no QR code confirming authenticity, as well as structural defects; Falling parts can cause children to choking. According to the services, harmful chemicals are also used in them.

The popularity of original toys increases the sale of the so -called Blind Boxes, where it is not known what model is inside. Experts point to the “phenomenon of addiction” from this mechanism, known from collector's cards, which stimulates the desire to buy. In China, the sale of Blind Boxes to children under 8 years old is prohibited.
Fakes intercepted by customs officers in the Netherlands are destroyed or after recycling.
