“The meeting with Rubio is scheduled for tomorrow,” he told reporters.
Zelensky has been in Munich since February 13 for the annual security conference.
The Financial Times noted that Rubio yesterday missed a meeting about the war in Ukraine with European leaders gathered there.
According to him, the head of the US State Department was not present at the Berlin Format meeting on Ukraine due to the large number of negotiations that he was having at the same time. The US official added that in Munich, the US Secretary of State is discussing the topic of Russia and Ukraine at “many” other meetings.
On February 4, Rubio stated that the list of open issues to achieve a peace agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation had been significantly reduced.
Context
Zelensky, in an interview published on February 12, said that American President Donald Trump is interested in ending the war in Ukraine before the midterm elections to the US Congress in November. At the same time, the Ukrainian president noted that Ukraine would rather abandon the peace agreement altogether than agree to a bad one.
Previously, the media wrote that the United States and Ukraine discussed the possibility of peace with the Russian Federation in March. It was assumed that any peace agreement would be put to a referendum in Ukraine, where national elections would also be held at the same time. However, this deadline will most likely be postponed, since there is no decision on the key territorial issue.
On February 11, Zelensky did not confirm the Financial Times information about his intention to announce on February 24 the holding of elections and a referendum in Ukraine.
Trump said on February 13 that the aggressor country of the Russian Federation allegedly wants to conclude a deal, so Zelensky “must act”, otherwise he will “miss a great opportunity.”
