Zelenski participates from Berlin in consultations between European leaders and Trump, before the Alaska summit / “There are extraordinary people, who want to reach an agreement,” says the White House leader

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski is in Berlin to participate, along with Donald Trump and European leaders, at a virtual meeting hosted by Germany, two days before the US president met in Alaska with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. European leaders are trying to emphasize the risks of sacrificing Kiev's interests at the first US -Russia summit after 2021, notes Reuters.

Trump said that Alaska discussions will be a “tattoo” meeting in his efforts to get a ceasefire in the war triggered by Moscow against Ukraine, after, last week, he aroused concern in Kiev and in Europe saying that any agreement would imply “an exchange of territories”.

Zelenski was received in Berlin by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The two participate, from 2:00 pm (12:00 GMT), in a video conference with leaders in Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy, Poland and the European Union. At the discussions, the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte is also present.

Trump and JD Vance Vice President joined the call at 3:00 pm (13:00 GMT).

“I will talk to European leaders soon. There are extraordinary people, who want to reach an agreement,” Trump wrote on Social Truth before the video conferencing.

Europe and Kiev are afraid

The unpredictability of the Alaska summit has fueled the fears of Europeans that the US and Russia could make major decisions over their heads and even try to force Ukraine to accept an unfavorable agreement.

“We are now focusing on making sure that this does not happen – collaborating with American partners and maintaining coordination and unity on the European side,” said a high official from Eastern Europe.

Fearing not to irritate Trump, European leaders have repeatedly repeated that he welcomes his efforts, but stressed that there should be no agreement on Ukraine-from which Russia occupies almost a fifth-without the participation of Ukraine.

The Trump administration tempered the expectations on Tuesday, telling journalists that the summit will be a “listening exercise” to find out what it would be necessary to reach an agreement.

Trump's acceptance last week to participate in the summit was a sudden change after weeks in which he expressed frustration for Putin for resistance to the US Peace Initiative. Trump said that his envoy made “significant progress” at the discussions in Moscow.

Several high -ranking European officials have told Reuters that they see a risk that the summit will lead to an unfavorable agreement for Europe and Ukraine. They said that the European unity would be essential if such a situation were reached.

After meeting with Trump, the “coalition of the willing ones” – a group of countries working on support plans for Ukraine in the event of a cessation of fire – will meet online.

Before the discussions, Zelenski said it would be impossible for Ukraine to accept an agreement to ask for the withdrawal of troops from the east of the Donbas region, a large part of which it is already occupied by Russia.

This, he told journalists on Tuesday, would deprive Ukraine of a vast defensive network in the region, facilitating a possible deeper advance on Ukrainian territory in the future.

He said that territorial problems can only be discussed after establishing a ceasefire and after Ukraine will receive security guarantees.

The spokesman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexei Fadeev, said that the position of Moscow was not changed from the one expressed by Putin in June 2024.

As preconditions for a cessation of fire and the beginning of the negotiations, the Kremlin leader asked that Ukraine withdraws his troops from the four regions that Russia claims as his, but which he does not fully control, and to officially give up NATO accession plans.

Kiev immediately rejected these conditions, qualifying them as equivalent with a capitulation.

President Nicuşor Dan participates, through video conferencing, at the meeting “Coalition of the disposed”

President Nicușor Dan also participates on Wednesday at the “Coalition of the A disposed of” meeting – Coalition of the Willing, which takes place in video conferencing format.

According to the Presidential Administration, the meeting is scheduled at 5:30 pm.

The German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, the French Prime Minister, Emmanuel Macron, and the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, will chair the meeting.

President Nicușor Dan sent a message on Tuesday in which he reiterated Romania's support for Ukraine, but also welcomed Trump's involvement in peace negotiations.

“I welcome President Donald Trump's efforts to contribute to the conclusion of the illegal war triggered by Russia against Ukraine and to build a fair and sustainable peace,” said Dan.

“We signed, together with the other European leaders, our common statement that states unequivocally: peace cannot be built without Ukraine, without respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity and without the Ukrainian people to decide their future,” the president continued.

“We will continue to support Ukraine, together with European and transatlantic partners, for a safe, stable and democratic future in the region and for the defense of the values underlying the European project,” he said.
